Lactoferrin and influenza virus - Entered On Tuesday, 28 April, 2009
In 2005, researchers from the Morinaga Nutritional Science Laboratory in Japan, looked at the effect of Lactoferrin and other milk proteins on the influenza virus in an animal study.
Milk contains a wide variety of host protective factors against infectious microbes. Among these protective factors, lactoferrin (LF) and lactoperoxidase (LPO) have been reported to exhibit antiviral activities as well as immuno-modulatory effects. The results suggested the potential of oral administration of Lactoferrin to attenuate pneumonia in influenza-virus-infected mice through the suppression of infiltration of inflammatory cells in the lung.
